Project:
Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, Fairfax County, Virginia
The Challenge:
Home to about 1,300 inmates, the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center faced increased space needs due to a high population growth in the surrounding area. After the renovation project began in 2004, ColonialWebb Contractors installed and upgraded equipment for the detention center.
Our Approach:
Operating under specific security requirements created additional challenges that ColonialWebb managed successfully. We assembled mobile teams of talented tradesmen who held special background clearances. Working in phases, the teams minimized interaction with and the disruption of the inmates.
We’ve performed the following upgrades to the facility:
- Installed stainless steel duct and new controls in laundry room
- Installed new lint filter
- Upgraded the existing boiler room to a new heating boiler to allow for standby operations
- Installed a new 100 percent makeup air unit on the roof
- Coordinated extensive modifications to existing duct system
- Renovated and upgraded eight major air handlers
- Installed new high-efficiency motors and variable speed drives
- Replaced a plate-style heat exchanger, an outdated shell and tube model
- Initiated a new domestic water booster pump package
- Replaced and reconditioned an abandoned heat recovery water system
The ColonialWebb team complied with all U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Indoor Air Quality regulations in association with this project.
