Design Build

Project:
Sentara Virginia Beach Hospital, Virginia Beach, Virginia

The Challenge:
Located near the Atlantic Ocean, the hospital has a fundamental duty to protect its patients in the event of power loss or damage due to hurricanes. The hospital was concerned about its chilled water service to the operating room air handler should the central chilled water plant not be available during electrical outages.

ColonialWebb Contractors developed a plan to dedicate a back-up chiller.

Our Approach:
Since we installed the original air handler in a previous renovation, ColonialWebb gathered its old design data and worked closely with the hospital engineering staff on its criteria and budget.

With a design and field survey completed, ColonialWebb installed a 25-ton air cooled chiller. We placed the chiller and a dedicated pump and then connected them to emergency power. We installed piping to the air handler with changeover valves to isolate the chilled water plant and to accept water from the emergency chiller.

ColonialWebb personnel set all piping, electrical and piping insulation. We completed the job by successfully testing the equipment and ensuring that it would operate fully in case of power interruptions.
