Project:
Massey Cancer Center, Richmond, Virginia
The Challenge:
ColonialWebb Contractors performed mechanical and plumbing installations for the center’s addition and expansion project. To meet the criteria for this job, we carefully acknowledged the two distinct aspects of the assignment – expansion of the current facility and a completely new addition.
Our Approach:
For the addition, ColonialWebb placed a new 300-ton chiller and new cooling towers into the center’s current equipment room. The towers would serve both the new and existing chillers. To provide new primary and secondary piping loops, we added new pumping equipment and revised chilled water and heating water piping, with revised controls.
ColonialWebb extended and connected chilled water piping through utility tunnels to serve adjacent buildings and a main chilled water piping system, which flows to different buildings on the campus.
The mechanical aspect of the job required we install custom air handling units in a rooftop configuration along with laboratory exhaust fans and a laboratory air flow control system. The laboratory plumbing system included elements for gas piping, waste and D.I. water.
For a unique feature specific to this project, we had the privilege of assisting with the creation of the healing garden area for patients, which necessitated fountain piping and assorted equipment.
We accomplished several critical start-ups, conversions and changeovers in the process while not disrupting the daily operations of the existing center.
As construction began on the expansion, ColonialWebb reconfigured the necessary systems:
- Air distribution
- Lab services
- Chilled and heating water
- Laboratory air flow control
- Building controls
With an overall precision in detailing, planning and scheduling, ColonialWebb delivered the total project successfully and on time.
