Labs and Clean Rooms

Project:
MedImmune, Gaithersburg, Maryland

The Challenge:
MedImmune focuses on pharmaceutical research and development of treatments for infectious diseases, cancer and inflammatory illnesses. ColonialWebb Contractors was charged with outfitting the laboratory facility with hydronic piping and plumbing. The major project needed to be finished in 10 months.

Our Approach:
Contractors erected the shell of the building prior to our part in the process, which made this more of a remodeling job than new construction.

The systems under our scope of work included:

  • Hot and chilled water
  • Plant steam, low and medium pressure
  • Clean steam generation for humidification
  • Tempered and chilled glycol
  • Medical gasses and vacuum
  • Stainless steel process waste and biological waste collection
  • Process water
  • Natural gas
  • Domestic plumbing and fixtures

The job required about 63,000 linear feet of pipe in the 85,000 square-foot building. The major equipment required for the job included:

  • Steam boilers, 800 and 400 horsepower
  • Boiler deaerator and condensate return skid
  • Two 1200-ton HVAC process chillers
  • Two 125-ton glycol process chillers
  • Two water chillers
  • Four 1,000-ton cooling towers
  • 14 pumps ranging from 200 to 25 horsepower
  • Various heat exchangers
  • Several neutralization skids
  • Holding tanks ranging from 300 to 3,000 gallons

The aggressive 10-month schedule was a challenge that we met by working teams six days per week. Because of their long hours, ColonialWebb considered it a high priority to keep the teams motivated and enthusiastic about their work. A collaborative effort among all of our divisions kept us fully prepared to accomplish the demands of the project’s schedule.
