Project:
University of Virginia John Paul Jones Multipurpose Arena, Charlottesville, Virginia

The Challenge:
The arena houses a practice facility, academic center, dining area, and a central plant for heating and cooling this structure plus serving adjacent buildings in the future. ColonialWebb Contractors furnished mechanical and plumbing work for the new 15,000-seat complex.

Our Approach:
ColonialWebb studied the client’s data and devised a set of plans to guide the project. We foresaw the need to include independent supports for the large piping systems, rather than contend with an array of supports from pre-cast concrete roof panels. This forethought, along with up-front detailed planning, allowed the piping systems to be prefabricated in our facilities and then delivered on site for final assembly and erection.

Within the complex, we placed four large custom air units, totaling 85,000 CFM, to serve the arena itself, and 14 smaller units that are dedicated to the adjacent areas. We also engineered a smoke-removal system with multiple components and controls.

We outfitted the central plant with:

  • Two 1,200-ton chillers
  • One 400-ton chiller
  • Four 12,600,000 BTUs/hour
  • Medium temperature boilers
  • Cooling towers
  • Pumps
  • Piping
  • Heat exchangers
  • Controls

Our new plumbing arrangement serves the concessions, suites and a dining area along with hundreds of other fixtures throughout the facility.

At the upper structure of the arena, we performed distinct work for the exposed and painted double-wall supply ductwork. We fulfilled the difficult combination of a finish-painted appearance with the technical needs of the mechanical system.

We completed the full scope of our contract before the scheduled deadline.
