Project:
Belk Corp., headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina

The Challenge:
Belk Corp. is the nation’s largest privately owned department store company with more than 275 stores in 15 states. The company utilized ColonialWebb Contractors in 2005 to successfully provide and install multiple roof-top HVAC units on their stores in four different states.

Belk’s installations involved units of all types, plus heating, electrical and controls. Timing was paramount. Only a large, seasoned HVAC contractor, like ColonialWebb, could complete such a detailed project with minimal disruptions.

The challenges continued that same year when Belk opened its new Northlake store in its hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina, and ColonialWebb rose to the occasion.

Belk’s contractor installed ultra-modern HVAC equipment and controls, but the system had not been tested under full operational conditions, with varying heating and occupancy loads. With a grand opening underway, Belk needed to ensure a comfortable shopping experience for its customers or face the risk of jeopardizing sales and making a bad first impression.

Our Approach:
ColonialWebb professionals immediately jumped into action and secured the latest information regarding Belk’s cooling machines, air handlers and architectural specifications, including complete programming guidelines for the chiller controls.

Our team worked closely with Belk management, both locally and corporate, and Belk’s control company to correct several items that had either been left out or incorrectly installed during the construction phase.

Though ColonialWebb technicians never had been to Belk’s new location before, or worked on the equipment, we were able to quickly meet the client’s HVAC needs and ensure a comfortable shopping experience. ColonialWebb continues to be who Belk officials call when HVAC situations need to be diagnosed and resolved quickly.
