Project:
Dulles Town Center, Dulles, Virginia.
The Challenge:
The 1.4 million square-foot, two-level regional mall tapped ColonialWebb Contractors on two separate occasions.
Our original contract in 1999 called for HVAC and plumbing services for the mall, tenant space and the central plant. In 2001, the owners decided to expand the mall to make room for more retailers, so they contracted us to provide all necessary mechanical and plumbing work.
Our Approach:
After consultations with the client on the first project, we answered the issue of cooling by providing two 800-ton chillers through more than 17,000 feet of piping. Twelve air handling units totaling 256,000 CFM would control the load. We installed more than 100,000 pounds of ductwork, and our plumbers laid 35,000 feet of storm piping – some as large as 15 inches in diameter.
Two years later in 2001, ColonialWebb revisited the site and added two chillers, one tower, two pumps and two gas heat rooftop units. We relocated existing equipment and all mechanical and plumbing work associated with a new Nordstrom store. The project also included extending the CHWS/R piping from the main chiller room to the Nordstrom’s new retail space.
