Project:
Richmond International Airport, Richmond, Virginia

The Challenge:
The airport is undergoing its largest upgrade ever – calling for a new central plant and associated mechanical gear. Richmond International Airport hired ColonialWebb Contractors to tackle this enormous undertaking.

The project’s biggest test involved providing a seamless transition from the old facilities to the new while the airport remains fully functional and operational.

Our Approach:
ColonialWebb designed the new central plant to consist of three chillers and cooling towers producing 2,100 tons of cooling. In addition, four boilers with a total output of 18,400 MBH now provide heat in the winter. The central plant serves all concourses, the new terminal expansion and the security checkpoint addition.

In the newly expanded terminal, we placed 10 new air handling units with gas-phase filtration on the third-floor mechanical mezzanine. The units feed 208,000 CFM of air into the new 269,000-square-foot bi-level terminal.

Contractors also expanded the security checkpoint area by 40,000 square feet to screen passengers faster. We installed six new air handling units to air condition the customers and airport workers in the security area.
