Jesse Wells, our Health and Safety Coordinator, was born and raised in Portsmouth, VA where he attended Cradock High School. After graduation, he went to Tidewater Community College before getting married. Jesse started his career as a firefighter for the City of Chesapeake. According to Jesse’s mom, he wanted to be a firefighter ever since he was a small child. Jesse became certified through the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Hazmat Specialist and was an instructor with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. In 2006, he retired from the same fire department as Captain. Throughout his firefighting career, he worked on safety committees that developed standards on everything from protective gear to building collapses.
In 2006, still very passionate about safety, Jesse’s work was not done. He went to work in the chemical industry as a safety professional and fire brigade leader. He was responsible for training the brigade, the leadership team, and the emergency operations center personnel. He worked in this industry for three years before going to work for the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) where he helped design emergency exercises for the states five nuclear power plants.
In 2018, Jesse joined the ColonialWebb family where he is responsible for our Manufacturing shop, our central Virginia Electrical group, as well as our Northern Virginia and Baltimore teams. Jesse likes to remind the team that safety is about looking out for yourself and for your teammates. He has eagerly adopted the ColonialWebb 5x5 philosophy and is happy to teach new teammates how to take 5 seconds and 5 steps to analyze their surroundings and identify any potential hazards.
Jesse has a bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health from Columbia Southern University, and he is a Certified Safety Professional. Jesse has been an EMT since 1980, and a fire/rescue/hazmat instructor for 30 years.
In his spare time, he enjoys keeping up with his seven grandkids, camping, hiking, and kayaking.
Although he says he’s no good at it, he enjoys photography. His natural talent is singing, and he is in a men’s acapella group. Stop by and ask for a demo, he’ll give you one!
We are proud to have him as part of the ColonialWebb family and look forward to the great things to come!
