TJ TUPPONCE, HEALTH & SAFETY COORDINATOR

TJ Tupponce’s journey in education began when he graduated from King William High School in 2002. He then attended Old Dominion University before graduating from VCU in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree of Science in Pre-Medicine. In 2006, he joined the Army Reserve and was deployed to Kuwait in 2008 during Operation Freedom.

When he returned from deployment, TJ shifted his attention to occupational health and safety. Having come from a family that works in the trades, TJ witnessed the devastating effects of being injured on the job - his grandfather lost both hands in a work injury while managing a steel press. That incident left a significant impression on TJ, and he decided that he wanted to focus on being proactive to injuries.

In 2011, TJ brought his passion and skills to ColonialWebb as a Site Safety Technician. He worked at the VCU School of Medicine job site, where he was responsible for the health and safety of 80 team members. He provided training to each person, all while focusing on the goal of developing relationships. He made sure that everyone understood that he was “a coach, not a cop.”

Since 2011, TJ has been instrumental in the development of the current safety program. He is a CHST, has an ASC, through the National Safety Council, is an authorized OSHA Safety instructor, and an American Red Cross certified First Aid, AED, CPR trainer.

TJ’s footprint covers construction job sites across VA and into DC.  When on-site, he remains committed to developing the employee safety culture by creating interpersonal conversations and relationships with each employee.

TJ is a member of the Executive Safety Steering Committee at ColonialWebb and is an active member of the Upper Mattaponi Indian Tribe. His passion for safety also led him to be a youth football coach for King William Youth Football and Cheerleading Association. Whether on or off the clock, safety doesn’t stop, and he feels his duty to always lead by example.

We are fortunate to have a skilled and passionate safety leader who cares about the health and well-being of those working with him.
